Your bedroom is supposed to be your safe place. Your sanctuary for calm. The place you go to relax and get a great night’s sleep.

But so many times, we let our bedrooms become far more than that, cluttered up with a piles of clothes, a library of books, a bunch of dusty counters, crumpled sheets and no decor. There’s nothing romantic or inviting about all that. And a room that you don’t feel happy or relaxed in, isn’t going to give you a great night’s sleep…or make you feel sexy around your partner.

If you’re ready to shed the look of your boring, unsexy or messy bedroom and give it a boost toward the oasis department, this post is for you.

7 Ways to Create A Peaceful Bedroom Oasis

  1. Get rid of the clutter – Do you have a lot of stuff in your bedroom that shouldn’t be there? Is there a spot where clothes just pile up? Free your bedroom of clutter and chaos so that you can soothe your soul and enjoy a better, more peaceful sleep.

  2. Infuse your room with essential oils – I have had a lot of success with essential oils as sleeping aids and mood enhancers. In fact, if you are feeling very stressed, I have two great essential oil blends for your to try. One will help you sleep well, and the other will get you feeling alert and upbeat in the morning. Don’t forget that if you infuse with a candle burner, you should only leave it on a few minutes and never fall asleep with it burning!
  3. When in doubt, go with blue – Paint can make a world of difference in a room. And blue is said to offer a very peaceful and calming effect. So if you’re thinking of painting your room soon, consider a blue tone. Or you can think about integrating blue into your sheets if you’re not ready to feel like you’re sleeping in the sky.
  4. Integrate soft lighting – Softer lighting helps make the room feel more relaxing, and low wattage bulbs (45 – 60 watts) are best in bedrooms. To make it easy to vary your lighting effects, add a dimmer. Then you can gradually bring up the lights in the morning or leave them down low in the evening, without having to blind everyone.

  5. Select the right fabric for your climate – Our bed always seems hot these days. And that may have a lot to do with our sheets. I’m ready to try out my first set of linen sheets since I live in the heat but love to sleep nice and cool.  Try this handy little guide to figure out how to find the best sheets for your sleeping style.
  6. Add fresh flowers – Does your mood improve when you have fresh flowers in your home or office? Mine sure does, and so do most other people’s. Imagine what will happen if you add a fresh arrangement of beautiful flowers to your bedroom!
  7. Make it DARK – For the best sleep possible, eliminate as much light as possible in your room. This may include getting darkening window treatments that won’t let light leak in, or you may need to cover power lights or turn over phones to get rid of lights within your room…but making your room as dark as possible with ensure your best sleep ever.

I think I’m going to try out ALL of these methods, starting with not hanging my wet laundry in the bedroom….sometimes space is limited in a condo. But your bedroom should also be your place of escape and solitude.
