It’s been getting colder and colder here in Berlin…which means more and more clothing when we go running because most of the stuff we’ve bought over time was for running in the warmer weather, when it’s actually really pleasant to do so. But running in the winter hasn’t proven to be so horrible thus far. It’s just that I’m not a fan of having my skin feel like it’s frozen while other parts of me are sweating. It just doesn’t seem right — or healthy.

So this past weekend, we decided to head out to buy some running gear that is more appropriate for the current weather (40-50°F mostly). For us, that’s a long-sleeved running shirt and long running tights. It doesn’t need to be anything too overboard or even fleece lined (that will come when it’s below freezing) but rather just something to break the wind chill and keep the limbs warm

We went over to a local sporting goods store called Karstadt Sport and found some good stuff in their closet section which was perfect. I ended up with a pink Nike shirt and some Alex pants which don’t match each other 100% but are close enough in my book. I’m not trying to win a beauty contest here — just stay warm and look decent in the process. The pieces are both really comfortable and fit well against the skin, which means less cold chills coming in while you run.

I was also in the market for something to wear over my ears that allowed for some wicking. I have a couple of headwraps that cover the ears but they are just your standard cotton or wool, which really end up leaving the head sweaty. So while we were in the store, I noticed some multi-purpose head scarf things, which made me remember I have a few of those myself that I bought a while back and never really used. I still have to work out exactly how I want to wear the thing, but it’s great for keeping my ears run while we run and it also is far more breathable than most of the other fabrics I’ve tried so far.

I have to admit that our running gear is by far the most colorful stuff we have in our closets right now…and some of the things that we actually wear more often. Stefan ended up with a green running outfit from Odlo (which also scored him a funky blue watch from them which was a bonus which we didn’t expect) and he’s also really thrilled with it.

Last Sunday morning, we did a morning run around our quarter of the Tiergarten in our new clothes and they felt great. It was our first time doing a stretch this long (6.5km) and it was a really nice morning, so we got to enjoy the run for a change, instead of just being in the dark. Those long runs on the weekend are definitely some of our favorites right now. Although I always am a bit scared of our long distance runs because they get longer and longer all the time, we’re still managing to pick up a bit of speed with each run and making progress when it comes to our running form and techniques (or so I like to think lol). No, we’re not planning on becoming professional runners anytime soon, and I still often kinda dread our runs before they happen (usually because the weather is gross and cold, and I’m not so fond of running in the dark all the time) but at the same time, when we haven’t been running for 2 or 3 days in a row (like today), I definitely start to miss it!
