Whenever an election rolls around, I am quite happy to be living in a foreign country. I don’t have to be overwhelmed with the political mudslinging and the endless number of commercials about what horrible thing this or that candidate has done. But this year, it seems that more people than ever are expressing their political views with “in your face” tactics that just don’t sit well with me.
I follow 96 blogs in my Google Reader account. Many of those are mommy and expat blogs that I’ve been reading for several months now, if not longer. I find it hard to locate blogs that I actually want to read because I apparently am not your typical mom, expat, 29-year-old and I generally just don’t find much I can relate to on other blogs. Unfortunately the number of blogs I want to read has quickly waned lately as people feel the need to turn their blogs about life into political sounding booths where they should omit all posts about what is going on in their personal lives and instead need to run down whichever candidate they are against in every post…for weeks on end.
Yes, blogs are there for the writers to express their feelings and get things off their chest…but when I start reading a house blog, or a blog about expat life, I don’t want to suddenly find myself in the middle of a political showdown. If that was what I wanted to read, I would subscribe to blogs strictly about politics. But I honestly find that dry, annoying and not worth my time…which is why I choose to blog about things that are more important to me. I’m sure there are other sites which contain much more well written information about the candidates than I will provide so if you want to learn those things, try your favorite search engine.
Thankfully there is only about a month of torture left. Then I hope some of the bloggers can return to their usual rants.
I was pretty shocked myself when I made a post this morning and then saw “published posts 1000” at the top of the page. Who would have thunk it 😉
Strangely enough, my husband and I picked the name Mackenzie when we first started dating 8 years ago and always knew we wanted it to be our daughter’s name, even when we didn’t think we would be having kids. I’m sure we will get plenty of flack about it over here but we both love the name too and even though we’re here in Germany and my husband has a very Bavarian name, we think the combination of the two goes well. Of course it’s an act of Congress to use a not so common name here in Germany so she will end up with three first names…but what can you do?
Thanks for dropping by!
I’m afraid I’ve fallen into political rants on my blog- I’ll be happy when election day is over.
I’m ready to leave the country (or at least Utah- we have a very heavy one-party system which is frustrating).
Allie, you are far from bad about political rants. There are a few blogs I read that don’t even have much merit to what they are posting! If there is some sense in the post, great…but I don’t need to be brainwashed by bloggers too lol
No worries – it will all be over soon! It’s a difficult time right now in the world so I guess it’s only natural that people want to try to persuade people to vote in their direction. Unfortunately I’m a liberal republican so I just don’t see eye to eye with anyone lol
Wow! 1001 posts–that’s incredible!
I have to admit that I’m especially glad to be out of the US during elections right now, too. We like to watch YouTubes of the debates and SNL versions. Then when we’re done, we turn it off… and it’s DONE. Just another reason to love being an expat!
Keep up the great blogging work! I’m so excited for you and your baby, too. (I’ve been meaning to tell you that.) I love the name Mackenzie!
