Here’s a fact that most people may not know about us: my husband and I are geeks…or at the very least dorks. He can build computers, I program websites (he used to as well), we’re tech and gadget junkies. Yep, I would say that makes us pretty dorky in the eyes of most. But for us, it comes in really handy.

For example, last Saturday, we stopped in at one of the small computer stores near us called PC Profi and asked if they had any Media PC’s. We have a wonderfully HUGE TV sitting in our bedroom, the cable is run to it and all we really need to do is hook things up. But we like to watch TV shows from the US and movies…and have a lot of stuff on our home server (more proof that we’re dorks) so that meant getting another computer for the bedroom. We figure with Mackenzie coming, we’ll likely spend a bit more time near the bedroom anyway so the small investment for yet another computer is worth it.

They didn’t have a media PC (or any cases) but we did notice they had a pretty nice computer for 299 euros. Then they offered us another 30 bucks off because Stefan said he would put it together himself. I was a bit surprised since he’s never really done this (he usually just puts in a component here or there) but I guess he figured it was time to take the plunge. Sadly, there were issues and he wasn’t able to get the computer running. So I took it in on Monday to see if they might be able to help.

First, I was a bit caught off guard because there were two high-school-aged girls working in the front which didn’t fit my computer geek ideal (purple highlights, rocker clothing, skate shoes, etc.) When did it become cool to be a computer nerd? I took the computer over to the service counter where another rocker 20-year-old asked me to run him through the problem. And after he plugged it in and opened it up, he determined we never would have gotten the thing running because the hard drive was toast. WTG Stefan – you did in fact have your first successful computer assembly!

So now we just have to finish installing software on it and find ourselves a wireless keyboard, mouse and such to use the thing. We’re leaning towards this Microsoft Entertainment Desktop 8000 thing which recharges and is backlit…the whole shebang. But only if we can get a decent deal on ebay. So hopefully in the next few days that will be resolved and fully functioning, even if it’s just with a temporary keyboard for now.

One thing is certain: PC Profi will be seeing a lot more of us. So far we’ve had nothing but positive experiences with them. Although I did have to chuckle a bit (it makes a little more sense now that I’ve seen some of the rest of the staff) but when we were in there Saturday, I noticed a flyer for a company called Wildflame that erotic buffets, topless servers and all sorts of other interesting things for parties. Not really sure they are targeting the right audience in that store but hey, geeks need some fun too!
