It’s another gorgeous day here and we’ve just finished the construction of the raised beds for the garden and just need to level out the dirt in the beds now and eventually add some fresh soil…which we still need to buy. We started the beds yesterday which you can read about here. This morning was the first of many that we haven’t needed a trip to the home improvement store so we got started on the beds nice and early. When we started it was still quite brisk out there and we where able to work at a brisk pace. This early spring heatwave (mid 70’s and way too warm for Germany is quite something. It quickly warmed up again though as the day progressed and we where definitely feeling.
We where able to finish up the other 4 smaller beds in about 6 hours with plenty of breaks and the delivery of the concrete for the greenhouse foundation…which we will start pouring tomorrow morning. We are definitely glad that digging is not part of our to do list tomorrow. We still need to rig up a way to get the pump working so we have running water at the back of the barn instead of having to lug it from the well or rain collection tanks.
We figure we can pour the greenhouse foundation tomorrow then go to the Hagebau in the afternoon to pick up the wood for the greenhouse (among other things) so we can start construction on Saturday already. We need to make as many of the cuts on Saturday as possible since we’re supposed to be quiet on Sunday’s and the miter saw is not even close to quiet. But I do think we may be able to get away with some hammering if we don’t start too early. We’ve decided to lay a wooden floor with outdoor flooring over the greenhouse foundation to make it look a bit nicer so we have to work that in somewhere before the full construction of the greenhouse takes place also.
Needless to say, we still have a lot of work in front of us in the coming days. But so far things have been going really well and pretty much according to plan. The realization of just how huge this garden project is really hit us both yesterday afternoon as we relaxed and planned. But there’s no stopping now. We’ve made huge progress so far so if we just continue taking things one step at a time, we’ll get through it all ok.
Here is where we stand right now. After I finish this blog we will head back out there to do some more soil moving and rigging the Gardena hoses. This little video is our first trial of using short clips of our projects. If you like it, let us know and we will see about using videos more often.
I think using video is a great idea! 🙂
Ummm.. DUH.. Video.. a MUST!
