This is a repost from our blog Self-Reliant Yuppies. Since it discusses projects that are going on within our farm, I figured those who aren’t reading that blog might find it interesting ๐Ÿ™‚

There’s a houseblog called Brooklyn Rowhouse that I love to read when I have the chance. Steve, the blog owner has done some amazing woodworking projects in his house. He recently posted about cleaning up his workshop after doing 9 months worth of projects and the huge amount of scrap wood and sawdust he had around. He also mentioned that he has a Vacuflo central-vac system in his workshop…an idea which I think is really ingenious.

We will ultimately build a much longer workbench at some point to integrate all the tools that Stefan has acquired…and the others which will almost certainly come. We also need more workbench space to assemble things without having to use the floor. This means we will need to do a bit more disposal work in the back corner and remove another large shelf which is full of bits and pieces of wood. I’m seeing another trash container in our future…only then can we really begin to build our optimal space for the woodworking shop.

Stefan has a lot of projects coming up that are going to require him to hone his woodworking skills. We will be taking on things like building Jake’s chairs and then building out our horse stalls into a guest house. We will be posting a much more extensive discussion about that build out project later…

In the midst of all these improvements to the workshop area, I think we could definitely consider installing a central-vac unit in the barn. I would possibly even extend it around the barn a bit…but that is an investment in time and money that I don’t really see us making in the very near future.
