As it turns out the process of building a foundation is not very difficult – it is tiring however and if given the choice to build another one ever, we will pass on it. Carrying 40kg bags of concrete on a hot day is not really fun – next time we go for the pre mixed stuff. It was cheap however, only costing us about 150 Euros all together including everything required.

The process is pretty straight forward and we where making good progress. You may note in the pictures that there is still growth on the ground when we pour the concrete. We made a judgement call figuring the mass of the plants as they rot out will be less than the settling of the ground if we removed the top layer of soil and used a machine to compact the ground. This part of the yard hasn’t be turned for ages and is 100% solid.

It was an exciting moment when we finally filled up the trench around the outside and all of the middle. When we reached the depth of roughly 2.5 inches we inserted the rebar. This is simple, just lay it in, push it down a bit and start pouring on more concrete.

After filling up the framing, which took most of the day without interruption (plus 1 hour for 2 more trips to the home improvement store) we where finally ready to complete the foundation. Perhaps we should have taken a little more time with this, since we didn’t get a 100% smooth surface, but it is definitely useable and straight as an arrow.
