Since the meeting with the kitchen sales guy earlier this week, I think I have been bitten by the kitchen planning bug and I am really interested to do research and get some more concrete ideas about how we really want to plan this area of the house. It could also have to do with the fact that it’s finally Friday and I don’t feel overly motivated to get work done…but that will come eventually anyway. It can only be avoided for so long 😉

Hubby and I have done a bit of research thus far. We have been to a few stores in the area which have a few refrigerators to look at but no kitchen stores yet so the selections have been rather small, especially when it comes to side-by-sides which is what we have our hearts set on.

We thought we’d decided on a Samsung we saw on sale but after looking at it in person, we decided we could do a lot better. Although the fridge was nice and had most of the features we were looking (until we got on the Internet and saw what the more expensive Samsungs have and then we liked those a lot more lol) but we noticed that the shelves in the doors are very narrow and would probably barely be deep enough to hold a 2-liter bottle of Coke.

So we continued the search and came across a Daewoo which we liked because the shelving on the door is much deeper and should have plenty of room for condiments and drinks and all those other random things that often get stuck in fridge doors. The fridge is around €1200 which is quite pricey when you consider what you could get in the US for that but side-by-sides are really just starting to gain popularity here so it’s to be expected. I mean what we’d really love to have is one of those super nice Sears fridges but the shipping would probably be a problem…and then there’s the power problem as well lol.

A few days ago, I got a newsletter from hgtv.com and they had some ideas for kitchens and baths and so on…and since we are planning a lot of things in that area of the house, I figured I’d read the mail to see if there was anything useful in there. What I found was a GORGEOUS Liebherr fridge which is actually quite similar to the Sears fridges when I think about it. There would be plenty of space in there and although there are no water and ice dispensers in the door, there is an ice maker so that certainly gives it good potential. It is a frost-free model as well which surprisingly enough is not a given when you buy a fridge here and de-frosting is not really my ideal way to spend a day. But of course the price tag on this sucker is twice what the Daewoo is but then again it’s probably about twice the space inside too. At €2400 it is rather steep if you want nice things, you have to pay a nice price lol. (Actually the prices seem to have gone up and it’s about €4000 for the fridge below as of July 2007!!) You can see more about it here.

Naturally, no decisions could be made until I’ve seen one in person but I have seen the baby brother of this fridge and I loved it to. Don’t love the price but I guess if we were able to scrimp somewhere else, we might be able to swing it…it all depends on the costs we come up with for all the other improvements and how we end up financing our kitchen, if at all.
