The dining room, along with the living room, is meant to be one of the most convivial places of your home. This is where people can enjoy quality time with their family, bring friends together and share good food. In smaller places, the dining room might not be a distinctive and separate room on its own but is probably more like an extension of the kitchen or of the living room. The latter scenario makes having dinner together and spending family time together more difficult as it might just be easier to sit on the couch with a TV dinner or simply fix a sandwich in the kitchen.

It is time to put the dining room back at the centre of family life, through better furniture and decorating. We have compiled a few hints about dining room furniture designs and a handful of interior decorating tips that will help you make your dining room family-friendly!

Create a separate space for the dining area

If your dining room area is actually part of an open plan kitchen or just consists of a dining table stuck in one of the living room’s corners, you should make sure that you keep everything separate in order to create two different living environments. One good idea is to work with two different colour schemes and to choose different furniture styles to section off the dining area and cooking/ living areas. Regarding the choice of dining room furniture, you can go for a dining room set that comes with high back dining chairs as they will do a great job at setting a mood and cutting off the space. You can also mismatch furniture to create a more eclectic style.

Comfy furniture that will make your guests jealous

Creating a comfortable environment is also an important element to work on. Who wants to sit on a very hard wooden chair if the couch next to it looks way comfier? You should choose comfortable furniture such as upholstered dining chairs with supportive back rests or place a soft rug on the floor in order to maximize the individual comfort of your guests. Regarding the dining table you should look for a model with an extendable option so that you will be able to accommodate surprise guests at the same table. Choose a dining table that provides them with enough space to move around: a dining table should allow your guests to have a 53cm wide area at minimum and 60cm to feel comfy.

Cut off distractions and improve interactions

By distractions we mean the TV or any other electronic devices that can break the mood. A great way to make your guests and family feel good around the table is to choose a round or an oval dining table rather than a square or rectangular one in order to make interactions and conversations easier. There is no worse situation than being left alone at the very end of a rectangular table and missing out on everything that is going on.
