Although we weren’t looking to get too destroyed over the course of the day, Lanternfest is all about getting your party on. So instead of stocking up on tons of beer, we decided to give rum punch a try. I found a recipe that called for orange juice and lemonade concentrate – two things that are not readily available here in Germany. So as usual, I modified and made it work.

The flavor of this punch was really nice although you have to be careful with it because you barely notice the alcohol in it. It’s only after you’ve been drinking it for an hour or so like it’s Kool-Aid that you start to realize you’re quickly getting drunk. Thankfully, with all the snacks we had around, we were able to pace ourselves. It definitely helped to liven up the afternoon, though. And I think that at an even bigger party, this punch would be fantastic to serve. It’s rarely inexpensive but all the sugar in it really drives the alcohol into your system.

If you want to keep the punch cold without watering it down, make some ahead of time and then freeze the punch as ice cubes. Or fill a rubber glove with punch and freeze that, then you can have funky hands floating in your punch later on. You can also make this punch ahead of time (like the night before) but leave the ice and carbonated drink out until you’re ready to serve it. Add more sugar if you want a sweeter taste.
