American expats and our shopping habits
As you have very likely learned in the last few weeks, we went “home” to Florida for two glorious weeks and spent Christmas over there. I will not even begin to rub it in regarding just how awesome the vacation was (because there will be more posts about that like our trip to SeaWorld and the amazing fact of being able to go swimming on Christmas day and get a sunburn on the beach the day... read more

Flour in Germany: Not as easy as it seems
In America, it was quite easy. You went into the grocery story, you picked up a bag of flour, you took it home and you did whatever you wanted with it. It was the flour called for in every recipe known to man: all-purpose flour. And it would make sense that this multipurpose, good for everything flour is readily available. So you move to Germany and you go shopping and you find Weizenmehl and you think... read more

5 Sites to Keep You Out of the German Stores
I know that not all places in Germany are as unfriendly to shoppers as they are in Hessen, but one thing I am not a big fan of is being looked at like a crazy person when I go stand in line somewhere because I have a shopping cart full of stuff. The typical way of grocery shopping in Germany is to buy what you need as you need. This likely stems from many issues here in Germany such as limited availability... read more

Butcher Shop Cheat Sheet Auf Deutsch
I was really amazed at home many expats popped up last week to comment on their fears and facts about trips to the Metzger here in Germany. It seems like every time I turn around, there are more and more American expats here in Germany. Now for those of you that don’t live over here, and don’t ever plan to, you might want to just snooze through this post. But for those of us living over here... read more

Tupperware invasion
I’m going to my first Tupperware party this afternoon. I have to admit that it will be my first, ever. And I’m a bit scared about what I might be inclined to buy. Our neighbor across the street is hosting the party and her daughter is the same age as Mack. In fact, her daughter claims that Mackenzie is her best friend, even though they only see each other about once a week during mommy/toddler... read more

Being brave at the butcher shop
About a month ago, I got a great question from a reader who has been living here in Germany for about 1.5 years but had not yet been brave enough to take a trip to the local butcher. Trust me, I’m not passing judgment…because it’s a hairy situation and I wouldn’t even go to the meat counter in our local grocery story for a long time. What am I saying…I don’t even like... read more

Woof Wednesday: Cuz it’s dark out there!
Howdy and welcome to Wednesday, The winter is fast arriving and it’s getting dark a little earlier every day. Before the days when Mackenzie was ready for bed as soon as dad got home, I used to take my evening walks at that time. Which was fun in the summer because the days are so long. But in the winter, that meant it was dark, dark, dark. As dark as I am! And a big black Newfie running around in... read more

The coolest bike I’ve ever seen
We recently bought two old city bikes from our neighbor across the street. He is the bike man — the collector of all bikes within a 10 mile radius, living or deceased. I’m not kidding when I say that this guy has actually rented space from another neighbor around the corner from us just to house all the bikes he has. It must be at least 50 of them, from tiny toddler walk-instead-of-peddle bikes... read more

Never knew I would be so excited
A couple of weeks ago, the inevitable happened: our 9 year old washer/dryer combo machine spun for the last time. Over the last few years, the machine has been rather iffy. Last year when we turned into what looked like homeless people and pushed all our laundry into the self-wash laundromat (which we actually had to drive 30 minutes to and barely found), we thought life was over for it already. But we... read more
