I’m going to my first Tupperware party this afternoon. I have to admit that it will be my first, ever. And I’m a bit scared about what I might be inclined to buy. Our neighbor across the street is hosting the party and her daughter is the same age as Mack. In fact, her daughter claims that Mackenzie is her best friend, even though they only see each other about once a week during mommy/toddler music class. Totally cute. And the little girl is the shyest, most quiet child I have ever met.
So I decided it would be best to prepare myself before the party to get some idea about what kind of things Tupperware sells and just how expensive the stuff really is. I’m amazed at how far Tupperware has come over the years, no longer just being storage containers for food, but even offering roasting dishes and cooking essences. Not that I would buy a lot of the things because the prices are just through the roof. But it sure is nice to look at.
I was actually really surprised to find out that the product offering in Germany versus America is quite different. I went to look at the US site to see if there was more info about these little ravioli trays they have. Now that we have pasta attachments for the KitchenAid and have discovered the ease and wonder of making your own pasta in minutes, I’ve been dying to make ravioli. But I’ve been a bit hesitant about cutting squares and just pressing everything myself. So I’m thinking a tray like this could make the process easy, eventually something fun to do with Mack, and speed up the process, at about 1/10th of the price of the ravioli attachment for the KitchenAid.
I’ve also got my eye on these cups. I think they would be really practical for Mackenzie right now who is convinced that she needs to pour out the rest of her cup of water onto the floor after taking a few sips. Supposedly with a straw in the hole, these cups will not really leak at all. And it’s a more adult option than the usual sippy cup. I will need to locate some stainless steel straws or something to go along with them though…because I’m not about to start filling up the landfill with even more of those! (Would love to hear if any of you have good recommendations.)
Naturally, the event will be all in German, and I’m always a little concerned about that. Of course after living in Germany for nearly 10 years, my language skills are pretty good. But there are still things I don’t know or that I misunderstand, simply because I usually am not immersed in the German language during the day.
On top of that, I tend to cave under sales pressure, so I hope that searching on ebay last night where I found you can get a lot of new Tupperware stuff at least 1/3 off (and save even more if it’s barely used), I hope that I can keep from feeling like I need to be extra friendly since this is a neighbor I see all the time.
What’s your take on Tupperware? I do happen to own about 5 pieces of it, but I have no actually bought any of them myself. Somehow I’m lucky enough to just inherit it from random people!
They have these lovely bowls for soup….its a must have! They have these vents for steam…I love them
We use the pitcher daily.. but my roommates can’t seem to figure out how to put the lid together.. But other than that, we like the size cause it hold 2 liters of whatever we make.
We actually like rubbermaid products better.. Less expensive and when they get stained red from tomato sauce we don’t feel as bad tossing them.
I would snatch up a 2 liter pitcher in a heartbeat. They just don’t have them over here lol. There was a 10liter bowl on sale for 19 bucks…everyone was just like “what in the world would we do with something that HUGE”…while I sat there thinking up uses lol.
Have you tried bleaching the stained containers? If you want to skip the bleach, you can also make a paste of baking soda and a little water. Rub it on the stained parts, let it dry, then put it in the dishwasher. and repeat is necessary. You can probably scrub it a bit with the baking soda also after it’s dried in…wet the baking soda a little and scrub. Just a thought ๐
I like Rubbermaid because if it gets stained I do not hesitate to get rid of it, because of the price-difference.
And I rather buy at ebay than at those parties (again the price !)
My impression was that German Tupperware parties were an excuse for women to get together and drink wine. Maybe yours will be different since it’s in the afternoon… ๐
Well there was definitely no alcohol at this event, although that would have made things a lot more fun. Where can I sign up for that Tupperware club? ๐ Would have been extremely convenient since I live about 40 meters away! lol
I’ll admit my wife has been to only one German Tupperware party. It was her first night out after becoming a mother, she was warned in advanced about the wine, and ended up having to take a taxi home.
And today we still have a Tupperware knife that we really don’t have much use for. ๐
Tupperware is is pretty neat stuff (I am jealous of the ravioli maker which is not available in the Canadian catalogue either). I wanted so much at my first party and was just starting to fill a home with my husband that I sold it for a couple of years. The important thing about Tupperware is that something is always on sale. Join the consultants email list and she will send you the monthly flyers. Save buying what you want for when it goes on sale. Last piece of advice, don’t buy a school lunch kit for a kid or husband. The pieces get lost and you won’t have the set for very long!
I decided to go ahead and get the ravioli maker so ‘ll be sure to let you know how it goes. Maybe I can send you one if it’s fabulous ๐
I can definitely see how staying up on the sales is a good idea. They had some pretty decent offers but nothing I could live without. I’ve got my eye on a bread keeper too but might ebay it eventually. We’ll see how the other stuff works out first. And very excellent advice about the lunch kits!
I have the cups with lids and we use them all the time! I am Tupperware-loyal – I send Peter’s lunch to work in Tupperware, I mix food in their bowls, I pour drinks from their pitchers…need I go on? I LOVE their stuff! ๐
So are you hosting parties and getting lots of free goodies too? I was pretty surprised about the fabulous host present. Although I’m pretty sure my host has a serious Tupperware addiction ๐ Clearly I have a lot to learn about Tupperware lol
No, I’ve never hosted a party. In fact, the days of parties seems to be dwindling here. I don’t know if it’s because of the cost (and people are watching their money a little closer these days), or because once you have your collection of Tupperware it will last forever! ๐
That I definitely believe about the stuff lasting forever. I like that they are trying to encourage moms to cook more by making things easier for them in the microwave, but that’s not really how I roll lol. The stuff you can bake in though, and the pans…wow. Really gorgeous and wildly expensive!
I have mixed feelings about Tupperware. Websites that you go to to check the safety of Tupperware in the microwave give you mixed opinions, some say it’s safe, some say it’s not. I think the only occasions it would actually be dangerous would be if you overheated the Tupperware while warming something.
As a result of the little bit of research I did I now take the totally safe approach and warm things in the microwave in glass containers only. My thoughtful son gave me a set of glass containers with plastic lids to use in refrigerator storage of leftovers. They work great in the microwave, sans lids of course.
The great thing about Tupperware is that food can be kept in your fridge for a longer period of time before it gets green and fuzzy and must be tossed. ๐
By far, in my opinion, the best thing to do with small amounts of vegetable leftovers when you clear the table is to dump them all together in a container which you keep in your freezer. When the container is full dump it in a stew pot with a soup bone or two and some chopped tomatoes, and perhaps an onion or two and let it simmer for a few hours. Make some nice crusty cornbread to accompany your stew and dig in. ๐
Sounds like you’ve got the Pyrex glass stuff I would LOVE to have. I don’t know why, but they just don’t sell those Pyrex containers over here.
I’m turned off about the fact that the Tupperware containers aren’t versatile from freezer to microwave; it’s basically one or the other. I generally don’t “nuke” too much stuff in the microwave in plastic, but clearly I need to think about doing it even less.
Your leftovers stew sounds fabulous!
Here in the US The Vent n Serve product line can go from the freezer to the microwave. See if the have it there,I haven’t looked at a German catalog in a long time. They are great to have and I really enjoy them.
Andrea, Tupperware consultant from NC
I will look into that Andrea. I don’t remember seeing anything like that in their catalog but since they only put a few things in there at a time, it could be in something coming up instead or just online. Thanks ๐
Oooo, I want to know what you went home with! I still have a cake and pie Tupperware set that I ALWAYS keep track of when we move…no matter what, that freakin’ set better make it safely into a box! The set has to be at least 12 years old and looks brand new – still love it. ๐
Those cups are awesome and they keep the wasps out in the summer – a definite must-buy! No clue about the ravioli tray, you are clearly far more skilled and brave in the kitchen than I. I totally cave under sales pressure too. If it gets ugly, you can always insist that you can’t decide but that you want to leave with a catalog and sleep on it. Then you can call the host the next day with your order. Otherwise you’re gonna end up with lots of crap that just doesn’t get used and doesn’t fit in your cupboards…! GOOD LUCK xoxo tj
Thanks for the suggestion TJ. I was pretty rational in there…did my research beforehand so I knew what I really wanted and what I would be better off buying online. Spent less than โฌ45 overall…but the specials were tempting lol.
tupperware is amazing! i had no idea it had come this far, i definitely need another looksie!
I was also pretty shocked about how far it had come…or things I’d just missed in the past. Like the knives. Wow.
I love, love, love tupperware. And try to reconcile my newer-than-this-love leanings towards using less plastic with the fact that it really is very likely to last me my lifetime so at least I’m not contributing to landfill. I used to sell it for a while at home but to be honest, I don’t have the neck required for persuading people to host parties and I was my own best customer.
I think the mikro-fix (http://tupperware.de/xchg/de/hs.xsl/142.html) range is the closest to what the vent n serve range looks like. At any rate, it can be microwaved and used in the freezer.
I have been promising to host a party for over a year now. I keep waiting until my apartment starts to look respectable enough (with, you know, curtains hung properly and stuff) to invite actual Germans into it. ๐ I should just go with the Irish method of tupper-partying, which does indeed mostly involve an evening party with several bottles of wine making the rounds. I would really like to get some of the knives though and hosting a party is the only way I am likely to manage to afford them any time soon. I’ve kept an eye on ebay from time to time but most stuff went for nearly the same as new by the time the auctions finished so I gave up.
Apart from all my basic storage stuff, my favourites are the corkscrew (never held or hosted a party without at least two of these being sold) and the tin opener. Cut open tins without a sharp edge to cut your finger on afterwards – fantastic!
So anyway, if anyone fancies coming to a tupper party sometime soon, let me know! ๐ Should have organised it sooner, the best offers are always in January and the first two weeks of February.
The can opener was very tempting. It looks pretty fabulous but the price tag is hefty! And the knives are definitely impressive although I found it interesting that there are so many additional ones available in the US. I’m still waiting for my stuff to come in (should be this week) and I can’t wait to make ravioli with the sheet for the first time! I have high hopes for the number of times I will actually use the things I bought. We’ll see how that pans out ๐
Hallo Tiffany
LG
Irene
Tupperware parties are just awesome but it was a good idea to get all the knowledge about what Tupperware actually sales. I also went to a few Tupperware parties and at first, I also didn’t have any idea what Tupperware products are and I asked a friend and she guided me about Tupperware products and she also gave me some Tupperware flyers to help me buy some products. Since then, I regular seek for Tupperware flyers to avail the discounts and save my money. I recently got a Tupperware April flyer 2019 and I am now waiting for a Tupperware May flyer.
