Last week I wanted to try out a new recipe and I realized I had absolutely no taco seasoning at home. This really doesn’t come as such as an enormous surprise to me since I generally don’t use a seasoning packet to make tacos. In fact, I’m not really sure I’ve ever bought an actual packet of taco seasoning in my life. It’s not really something I’ve seen too often in Germany (not that I’ve ever gone looking for it either) but considering that they don’t really know what real Mexican food is supposed to taste like in most parts, I have doubts that the packets would be worthwhile either.

At any rate, making your own taco seasoning is extremely easy and you probably have all the ingredients you need on hand already. Plus you don’t have to wonder what other sort of strange preservatives are being thrown into the mixture when you’re making your own. Trust me, I don’t need MSG in my tacos. Mixing this up will only take a few minutes and you’ll have about an ounce of taco seasoning when you’re done.

Instructions
  1. In a small jar or bowl, mix together chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, red pepper flakes, oregano, paprika, cumin, salt and pepper. Store in an airtight container.
  2. One packet equals 1-1 1/2 teaspoons taco seasoning. If you like your food spicy, add 1/2 teaspoons or more. If you’d prefer the more bland approach, go for only 1 teaspoon.
