Harvesting green goodies

We got to harvest a few more things from our garden last week…it’s always an exciting time. But it can be tedious when it comes to things like berries, especially gooseberries. They grow all over the bush and you really have to climb up, down and around the bush to see them all. Plus you have to be really careful not to get stuck with their long thorns. In our case, we also have to fight a... read more

What have you harvested in 2009?

I was just out in the garden and picked 1.658 kilos of strawberries. That’s over 3.5 pounds of strawberries! And the good news is, there’s going to be a whole lot more over the next couple of weeks. What are we going to do with all these berries? Well, I’m planning to make pound cake on Friday and will top it with fresh strawberries and whipped cream for dessert. And I seem to recall a... read more

An apple a day

Where my dogs at? We’ve moved into November and weather is still cool and lovely. Could be a bit wetter, though. And I hope everyone has managed to adjust to the time change now. We apparently moved our clocks back a week earlier than you U.S. dogs and I have to say I just find it stupid. I keep reminding mom that it’s dinner time at 5:30 instead of 6:30. Pure insanity. Any of you figured... read more

Leave no seed behind!

I made the journey into our garden today and was relieved that I didn’t want to run screaming from it as soon as I opened the back door of the barn. Unfortunately (and sometimes fortunately), we cannot see our garden from the main house…only when we walk through the barn and open the rear door. I think this is a major reason why we haven’t gotten further with it yet…then again, I... read more

A bit of progress in the garden

Well, we finally did something about the garden. I feel guilty for not going back there the last two days but Monday I was still recovering from working back there 3 hours on Sunday…and today it was just too hot in the morning to get out there. I may squeeze in a bit tomorrow morning but I have errands to run all day so I think Thursday will be my first day back out there…it should be a nice... read more

I almost can’t bear to look…

All right…the time has finally come. I am posting pictures of the garden regardless of how painful or embarrassing it might be. Who knows…maybe it will motivate me to get something going back there. The garden does not look good. It’s massively overgrown now and looks like we’ve left it for the crazies to take over. So pathetic – our neighbors behind us must hate us by... read more

Housewarming plants

Last weekend we had a rather large housewarming party at our house with about 50 guests and 15 kids…it was definitely a pretty big deal and we were completely blessed to have gorgeous weather which allowed us to have the party outside. One of the things I find great about housewarming parties (this was our second) is that you often get plants as gifts. Some people might find this annoying or not want... read more

Our new fig tree and how to grow figs

I can’t believe I didn’t write about this sooner but I guess I’ve had other things on my mind… When Stefan’s family was here two weeks ago, his aunt brought us a lovely little fig tree. It has several figs on it and I would say that they are beginning to ripen as well….but I thought I better do a bit more research about the plant before I do something wrong ... read more

Our venture into gooseberry wine

I figure it’s about time for an update about the gooseberry wine we are attempting to create. In case you missed our first post, you can read it here. Did I mention we won’t be able to drink it for a year? Woohoo Which is actually one of the reasons we are going to try our hand at apple wine which is a very popular drink here in the Frankfurt area, especially when mixed with sparkling water... read more

Photos from the harvest and our new freezer trunk

Somehow I completely forgot about adding photos to my post yesterday so I will post them now. Must have had a blond moment Here’s a photo of our red current harvest. As I said, it came out to about 3.5 kilos which isn’t so bad. We really aren’t sure what we will ultimately do with them but we did use some last year over Christmas in a current relish instead of cranberry relish... read more
