Yesterday evening, hubby and I took Ayla for her evening walk. She’s been relatively good lately and I’m trying to trust her a bit more so I figured I would take her off leash as soon as we got to the fields behind our house and when I’d seen there were no other dogs around. It’s pretty much pitch dark at 7:15 or so when we take her but at least the moon usually casts off enough light so we can see where we’re going and see the dog.

Just as you enter the fields, there is a fenced in area with two horses. One is a full size horse and the other is a small pony. Ayla always looks out for these horses when we walk by and sometimes we let her approach the fence and check them out. She usually sniffs at them and may bark and jump around in an attempt to get them to play. A few times she’s gone crazy and run into their yard to eat droppings – what a joy those days are and thankfully none of our neighbors have seen her doing this. But last night was the topper of it all. The horses still happened to be outside their stalls and Ayla decided it would be fun to go tearing into their area. Perhaps she thought she could play with them or something.

Both hubby and I kinda froze and waited to see what would happen. Ayla was racing around the area and the horses were sort of running around with her. We were just waiting for one of the horses to panic and wondering if they would let us in there if something happened to Ayla. But after a few laps, Ayla raced back outside and started barking at the horses. Maybe she wasn’t crazy about their style of playing. 🙂

Needless to say, she will not be allowed off the leash again near the horses for a while. The last thing I need every day is a heart attack as I wonder if my crazy dog is going to be trampled by horses. Fortunately, the owner of these horses has a large dog so at least they must have some idea what the crazy, furry thing racing around them is…and they almost seemed like they were playing with her. They didn’t neigh or anything but I don’t know if that’s a good sign or not lol. Too bad for Ayla, we won’t be finding out if they wanted to play anytime soon.
