Find yourself struggling with what to wear under that new strappy summer dress? Don’t fret anymore but take this great fashion advice from Katie on what to look for when you need just the right undergarments!

It’s all too easy to see underwear as an after thought. After all, no one sees it, except for your other half if he’s lucky of course. And, when budgets are tight, you’ll probably want to buy clothes and shoes you can show off. But, by investing in some well-fitting lingerie, you can make sure the pieces that are already in your wardrobe look their best. Here are my lingerie picks for this season, and what to wear with them:

Under your t-shirt

When you’ve decided on an off-duty look that includes a plain grey or white tee, there’s nothing worse than ruining the lines with bumpy lace or textured fabric. Given that designer Tommy Hilfiger is renowned for his all-American luxe sportswear look, it’s no wonder the brand does a good range of t-shirt bras in lots of different colours. The white Carley T-shirt bra would work well under most light-hued tees.

Under your backless dress

I think flashing a bit of back can be more alluring than wearing a dress with a deep cleavage. It’s a style Anne Hathaway, with her own brand of understated glamour, usually chooses for the Oscars. But, a normal bra definitely won’t cut the fashion mustard when wearing a backless dress. Maidenform’s Combo Wing range is renowned for staying put for hours.

Under your bodycon dress or skirt

It’s a badly-kept secret that many of the world’s A-listers wear Spanx under their red carpet gowns. Kim Kardashian recently accidentally flashed a glimpse of her shapewear under a tight pink skirt while Jessica Alba wore Spanx under her Fantastic Four costume and Katy Perry has said she almost always wears it. The stretch bodyshaping panty from the La Redoute Essentiels label offers a more affordable alternative and comes in either black or nude depending on what you want to wear them with. And, for even more control, there’s a high-waisted version from their plus-size range.

Under your skinny jeans

If you’ve been training hard enough to fit into a pair of skinnies, the style staple of supermodel Kate Moss, there’s no point in ruining the look with a VPL. So, there are only two options, bodyshaper pants that won’t leave any lines or a pretty thong. Tallulah Love’s Lavender Blue Dilly Dilly thong is a thing of beauty, made from silk, Chantilly lace and ribbon. So, you probably won’t mind if you end up flashing it a little when you bend down.

Just because it’s pretty

Whatever you’re wearing, just knowing that you have a beautiful matching underwear set on underneath can be enough to put an extra spring in your step. Stella McCartney’s Cherie Sneezing balconette bra combines a vintage-type structured shape with an up-to-the-minute colour palette of pink and orange. You could wear it under a shirt or a pair of boyfriend jeans and a sweater, and feel stunning.

They’re all gorgeous pieces that have inspired me to sort through my underwear drawer and invest in some lingerie which works under the outfits I already own.
